BlogEngine.NET Wish List

  1. Can we have support for markdown a lá stackoverflow?

    e.g.

Here's some normal text interspersed with some `Code`, some *italics* and **bold**.

    > and a quote

    etc

    stackoverflow uses:

    * [markdownsharp](https://code.google.com/p/markdownsharp/) for formatting
    * [google-code-prettify](https://code.google.com/p/google-code-prettify/) for syntax highlighting code

(I have got MarkdownFormatterExtension installed but it doesn't appear to do anything.)

  3. On site edit of theme master page and css files.

Something like what WordPress and Blogger.com currently has.

Then later on give it functionally like an theme editor or maker.

This this would be able to create themes from with in BlogEngine

But, just a basic editing function like viewing the theme files and edit and then save them would do for now.

Right now have to edit the theme files and then upload though ftp even it just one line of code or less to add to them.

Does not make sense to have it that right :)

  4. BlogEngine Gallery Wish List

    Hello BE Team;

I have been playing with the Gallery alot these days uploading extensions etc.

I have come up with a short wish list for possible changes.

Increase the time-out for sessions, its getting annoying that my session is expiring every two minutes
    Add a remember me feature
    Better version tracking.
Allow single version update click. This means from the contribution select "Add version" which will promote you with a page to upload a new version, with all the previous version text, screen shots etc added"
Allow for a Change log with each version as a version is typically…

  5. More control with the blog post text editor

I have been using wordpress for a long time but recently add a blogengine blog to my site as it uses asp.net and this was the easier option but one of the things I was really surprised with is how little control you have in the text editor.

When I write a post and add a link to some text I don't have any options to make that link open in a new window or open a pop window etc.

The other main problem I have found is that if I want to add an image to a particular place…

It seems that there should be a 'Draft' section for posts that aren't yet published. To the author, the post appears with all other posts so it appears as though has been published.. I don't agree with having it look published if it isn't, but if you insist it should be highlighted or something to give a visual clue that is isnt' live. There have been times that I forgot I didn't publish something because it appeared as though it was (at least to me). In my mind, it would make more sense to have it remain in a 'Draft'…

  8. Improving the Security of BlogEngine.Net

    Hey guys,
I've found some potential Security vulnerabilities at BlogEngine.Net.
Namely it seems like by default some HTTP Response headers are displayed :

    1. Server
    2.X-Powered-By

While the X-Powered-By response header can be removed when deploying in the IIS, you could remove the Server header.

By displaying the Server and the version (ASP.NET) an attacker could increase the attack capabilities.

I wrote a blog post about this, so maybe you can take a look at it

  11. Multiple themes and allow association to Page or Blog

At the moment only a single theme and mobile theme can be associated with a blogengine site.

Allowing multiple themes that can be associated with pages and blogs would give a much better flexibility.

  12. Admin tasks list could be rolled-up into a drop-down list to take up less webpage realestate

As per Blogger, admin tasks list could be rolled-up into a drop-down list to take up less webpage realestate (and put it up out of the way in the top nav strip)

  14. Why not update the latest download of BE with these changes?

Webmatrix 2 downloads version 2.5 of BE instead of 2.6. Thanks for the great work as BE just continues to get better and better. Thanks!

  17. Change username for a singleblog setup

Need to be able to change the username from "Admin" on a new out of the box singleuser setup. Feels weird leaving it as admin.

  18. Unify each blog's Dashboard address in the multiblogs mode.

In the multiblogs mode, at present, each blog's dashboard address is not the same. For example:
    http://www.website.com/tom/admin
    http://www.website.com/jerry/admin
    http://www.website.com/someone/admin

So, there are a few problems with this:
    1. I can not set the robots.txt to inform the search engine do not visit the above several folders.
    2. I can not set up the above several folders do not use CDN to speed up.

So I suggest that each blog's dashboard address is set to a unified address, just like:
    http://www.website.com/admin

  19. Using the SDF database instead of the default XML data

XML data is relatively fragmented, not easy to maintain.
SQL Server Compact database (.sdf) is file based, and developers can program easily on both MDF and SDF.
Many projects, such as Microsoft Orchard, are using SDF as the default data storage.

  20. Set Custom fields key list in web.config which may be more practical

At present, the author can add Custom fields when write articles. But the Custom fields can not be displayed on the page, the theme files need to be modified at the same time.
However, the authors do not have the right to modify the website files.

So, if we set the Custom fileds key list in web.config or other config files, will be better?

Web.config maintenance, and the maintenance of the website file, is the programmer's work. These jobs need to be done before the website online. The authors only need to fill in these fields when writing the article.
